I covered the Purple Martin Festival in Richmond for Nori Magazine, since it was so close to my home meaning I could walk over, sigh with boredom, and come home. I did it mostly because it sounded lame as hell and I'd even read that the birds don't even come to Shockoe Bottom anymore so... a festival to celebrate birds that aren't even there. I know, it's hard to hold the laughter back.
I took this as an opportunity to tie the festival into my makeup for the day. I knew I wanted to do somehting with purple because, well, that's obvious. But then it was like... what's better than just purple for the Purple Martin bird festival? Purple winged makeup.
Unfortunately, I'm not cool enough to own purple liquid eyeliner but I am cool enough to own several shades of bright purple eye shadow and and angled brush so it was like a match made in heaven.
I used several matte shades from my trusty NYX Nude on Nude palette (seriously, buy this thing already) for the base and then used Hollywood from my BH Cosmetics California Eye Shadow Sample palette and the purple color from the L'Oreal High Intensity Pigments duo in Flamboyant to do the wing. I didn't wet the eye shadow so the color isn't as bright as it could be but the two colors are still fairly well pigmented so i felt as if the colors were bright enough on their own. Then I tight-lined the outer half of my upper lash line with an NYX black eyeliner pencil, curled my lashes and used Covergirl's Clump Crusher mascara.
The color is a bit bold for everyday wear but I think it's a nice break from my usually very bold and thick black liquid eyeliner.
Have you ever used eye shadow for liner? How did it go for you?
